Canlaon City prepares evacuation plan as Mt. Kanlaon activity increases

The Canlaon City government is preparing to evacuate residents if Mt. Kanlaon’s alert level rises to 4. Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas announced the "Plan Exodus" strategy, which includes moving residents within 14 kilometers of the volcano to nearby towns. Currently, Mt. Kanlaon is at alert level 3, indicating high volcanic unrest. If alert level 4 is reached, it could lead to a hazardous eruption. A simulation exercise for evacuation procedures was recently conducted. As of December 28, there were 5,802 residents in evacuation camps and 2,014 others staying with friends or relatives. The provincial government has declared a state of calamity to access emergency funds for evacuees.
