Cardinal David returns to Philippines and calls for humility in Church mission
Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David returned to the Philippines on December 13, 2024, after being made a cardinal in Rome. He celebrated a thanksgiving Mass at San Roque Cathedral on December 14, attended by bishops, priests, and family members. In his homily, David stressed humility in the Church's mission, stating it is about God's work, not human achievement. He emphasized the importance of focusing on Jesus rather than on himself. David, who is also president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, highlighted his commitment to human rights, inspired by the martyrdom of Oscar Romero. He encouraged attendees to look at the cross, symbolizing a shift from personal attention to faith in Jesus.
