Caribbean disturbance forecast to strengthen into hurricane as it heads for Gulf of Mexico
A disturbance in the south-central Caribbean Sea is forecasted to strengthen into a hurricane early next week as it moves toward the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center reports it may pass near Jamaica as a tropical storm on Tuesday.
The system is expected to bring heavy rain and potential flooding to the western Caribbean. A hurricane watch is in effect for the Cayman Islands, and a tropical storm warning has been issued for Jamaica.
Additionally, a trough of low pressure near the Bahamas is likely to merge with the Caribbean disturbance. Subtropical Storm Patty is also moving east but is expected to weaken to a post-tropical cyclone soon.
