Cars stuck in drainage work pits in Coimbatore

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

In Coimbatore, two cars became stuck in pits dug for underground drainage (UGD) work on Sunday. The incidents occurred in the Nethajipuram area of Ondipudur. After several hours, the cars were finally pulled out. Local residents are concerned about safety during these construction activities. They are urging the authorities to install barricades and warning signs around the work sites. UGD pipelines are being laid across several locations in the east zone, especially in Ondipudur. R Ramya, a resident, expressed frustration about the slow progress of the work, which has been ongoing for over six months. She noted that workers sometimes dig large pits without proper warnings. On one occasion, workers left abruptly for a holiday, leaving a filled pit and causing difficulty for drivers in the area. M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, the corporation commissioner, acknowledged the issue. He stated that barricades and warning boards have now been placed at Nethajipuram. However, he mentioned that similar complaints have come from other areas. The authorities are looking into holding contractors accountable for not following safety measures.
