Case filed against foundation for riverbed encroachment in Mangaluru
Surathkal police have filed a case against the A. Shama Rao Foundation for allegedly encroaching on a riverbed near Mangaluru. The foundation operates Srinivas College in Mukka. According to the Revenue Department, the college encroached upon 23 cents of riverbed in the Nandini River area. The First Information Report (FIR) cites illegal entry onto government land. This complaint was made by Revenue Inspector N.G. Prasad. An official team investigated the site on March 6 after receiving tips. They discovered that the college had filled in parts of 4.11 poramboke land for construction. A thorough examination was conducted on March 10, followed by the lodging of the police complaint on March 17. Officials noted that the college management has since removed the soil from the encroached area, but the FIR was necessary due to the violation of government land. The pollution of the Nandini River has been a growing concern. Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian raised alarms during a recent meeting about sewage being dumped by local establishments, which has disrupted the Khandevu fish festival. Kotian has been advocating for action on this issue for seven years. Following these concerns, Deputy Commissioner M. P. Mullai Muhilan instructed the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to address the sewage flow and mandated local authorities to act within their jurisdictions.
