Cases of the rare genital fungus Jock Itch (tinea cruris) have increased in New York this year. The U.S. confirmed its first case of the Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII) in June, with four additional cases reported from April to June. All identified patients were cisgender men aged 30-39, who had recent sexual contact with other men. Similar TMVII cases have also been reported in France and Southeast Asia. The infection causes an itchy rash in warm, moist areas and usually responds well to over-the-counter antifungal treatments, according to CDC guidelines.
