Caves of Qud gains immense popularity after 17 years
Caves of Qud is a unique roguelike video game that has gained significant attention after 17 years of development. Its creators, Jason Grinblat and Brian Buckley, are amazed by its popularity. They recently discussed this with PCG’s Lincoln Carpenter at the Game Developers Conference. The game allows players to explore odd scenarios, including managing an extra-limb meta. Grinblat explained that even though players can have many limbs, the ideal character form in the game is a limbless sphere. They expressed surprise at how the game has transitioned from a small community of 18 players to a vast number of fans. Grinblat shared his feelings about the game's success, saying it feels "unreal" and like a daze. "More people have bought Caves of Qud than are in this stadium," Buckley noted, highlighting their amazement. With the official release, Grinblat said they plan to continue creating expansions, making it feel like the adventure isn't over yet. The developers have undergone personal changes during the game's long development, including starting families. Grinblat mentioned having two children while working on Caves of Qud, and both developers are recognizing the shift in their lives as well as in their careers. After the release, Buckley took a brief break, while Grinblat, busy with his young kids, found it challenging to rest completely. They reflect on their journey and are processing this moment in their lives, realizing it marks a significant change in their careers and personal lives.
