Cayetano seeks investigation into Masungi housing deal revocation
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has called for a Senate investigation into the decision by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to revoke a housing deal in the Masungi Georeserve, located in Rizal. This move has raised concerns about land use and environmental protection. In his Senate resolution No. 1323, Cayetano requested that the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee look into the cancellation of the Supplemental Joint Venture Agreement with Blue Star Construction Development Corporation (BSDC). This agreement had allowed BSDC to build housing units for government employees in the protected area. Cayetano emphasized the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. The DENR initially approved BSDC's project in 1996, which was later expanded in 2002. However, the agency cancelled the agreement this March, citing missing approvals and documents, as well as BSDC's failure to meet its responsibilities. The situation has created tensions, with the DENR accusing the Masungi Georeserve Foundation of prioritizing tourism over the housing project. In response, the foundation has claimed that the DENR has not adequately addressed illegal settlers and is weakening environmental protections. Cayetano believes it is essential for the government and private sectors to address this legal issue surrounding the Masungi Georeserve. The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee has not yet announced a date for a hearing on this matter.
