CCTV and safety measures enhance security for MMTS trains

South Central Railway (SCR) has announced new security measures for MMTS suburban trains. These will include installing CCTV cameras in all train compartments. There will also be real-time monitoring by Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel. Every ladies' coach will have panic buttons that are easy to access and linked to a control room and the train guard. The decision was made after an attempted sexual assault on a woman passenger on Saturday night. SCR officials, led by General Manager Arun Kumar Jain, discussed various ways to improve safety for all passengers, particularly women traveling alone. Among the planned measures is a mobile app that will integrate with the existing security helpline '139.' This app will feature a one-tap SOS option for emergencies. Additionally, WhatsApp groups managed by female RPF personnel will address women commuters’ grievances in real-time. Feedback from women passengers will also be gathered to enhance travel safety. RPF personnel will receive breath analyzers to test for intoxication among passengers. New display screens will be put inside trains to share safety messages and important security information. More female RPF and GRP staff will patrol trains, particularly in ladies' compartments and during late-night and early-morning hours. Emergency contact numbers will be highlighted in ladies' coaches and at important locations within the trains. Regular announcements at railway stations will inform passengers about safety measures and how to report suspicious behavior. Teams called ‘Meri Saheli’ will focus on high-risk routes and conduct mandatory checks. In addition, officers in plainclothes will be deployed randomly, based on past complaints and crime history. Efforts will be made to ensure that trains and stations are well-lit to help prevent crime. These changes aim to create a safer environment for all passengers in the MMTS train service.
