Ceasefire called after talks between DRC and Rwanda
Leaders from Congo and Rwanda have called for a ceasefire after talks in Qatar. This discussion comes as the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to experience conflict, which has been ongoing since the late 1990s. The M23 rebel group, which has backing from Rwanda, has captured significant territory in the eastern DRC this year. They were scheduled to meet with DRC government officials in Angola, but the M23 rebels withdrew from the talks. They cited new sanctions from the European Union as the reason for their decision. During the meeting in Doha, DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwanda President Paul Kagame emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in the region. This diplomatic effort raises questions about the future of the conflict and the potential for lasting peace.
