Central Visayas businesses urged to hire safety officers
Cebu City, Philippines – Workplace accidents are rising in Central Visayas, prompting a call for businesses to hire safety officers and first aiders. The Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas (DOLE-7) reported an increase in these accidents, noting that electrocution and falls are the leading causes of injuries. Roy Buenafe, the director of DOLE-7, highlighted the urgent need for improved workplace safety. The department is also concerned about health risks, particularly after receiving reports of deaths from heart attacks. As construction projects grow in the region, the need for safety measures is more pressing. DOLE-7 is encouraging businesses to promote and enforce safety programs. Buenafe emphasized that safety officers play a critical role in reporting accidents. This helps regulators implement measures to prevent future incidents. He stated, “If a safety officer fails, lives are at stake.” All businesses and public offices are required to submit their Occupational Safety Health Program to DOLE, according to Engr. Jose Maria Batino from the Occupational Safety and Health Center. However, many are still without safety officers and first aiders. Batino noted common violations include not submitting safety records and failing to meet health standards.
