Cereal factory closure in Bromborough threatens 314 jobs
A large cereal factory in Bromborough, Merseyside, producing popular brands like Cheerios and Shreddies, is at risk of closing. The closure could affect 314 jobs. Cereal Partners United Kingdom & Ireland (CPUK&I) announced that they are consulting with employees about the potential shut down due to a major drop in cereal sales. If the factory closes, production of Cheerios will move to a different site in Staverton, Wiltshire, which plans to invest £74 million and create about 60 new jobs. CPUK&I will also stop making cereal for supermarket brands once current contracts end. A company spokeswoman explained that the decision comes as both CPUK&I factories are not operating at full capacity. The changing eating habits of consumers and competition from other breakfast options has led to declining sales. The company expressed regret for the impact on workers and aims to support them during this challenging time. They are open to other solutions, including selling the Bromborough site. The news has shocked many, including the GMB union, which argues that the factory remains profitable. GMB regional organizer Matt Denton called it a deeply worrying time for workers and their families, emphasizing the factory's importance to the local community. CPUK&I has not provided further comments as they are still in discussions with staff. This situation follows a similar announcement last year, where Kellogg’s announced the closure of another factory in Greater Manchester, which will also result in job losses.
