Certain foods can linger in the body for days

Gut health expert Adrienne Benjamin has identified three types of foods that can linger in the body for up to three days. This can lead to bloating, discomfort, and other digestive issues. Red meat is one of the main culprits. It is nutritious but takes a long time to digest, sometimes up to 72 hours. This slow digestion can cause issues if consumed frequently, especially for those with lower levels of digestive enzymes. Fatty foods like burgers and fried chicken also contribute to slow digestion. While healthy fats are important, excess saturated fats can cause discomfort. Benjamin specifically highlights takeaway foods, which are often high in unhealthy fats and sodium, as serious offenders. Sugary foods like sweets and fizzy drinks can affect gut bacteria. These processed sugars can ferment in the gut, leading to bloating and discomfort. Although these foods may pass through the gut quickly, their side effects can last longer. Benjamin advises incorporating gut-friendly foods such as ginger, kefir, and high-fiber vegetables like broccoli and sweet potatoes. Healthy fats, proteins, and complex carbohydrates from sources like salmon, avocado, and chicken should also be prioritized. Staying hydrated, active, and avoiding highly processed foods are additional recommendations to support good digestion.
