Chagos Islanders plan legal action against UK Government
Two British women from the Chagos Islands plan to sue the UK Government over a proposed deal to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius. They argue that the islands should remain under British control and seek the right to return home. Bernadette Dugasse and Bertrice Pompe claim the Chagossian people have not been consulted about their future. They express concerns about potential discrimination and obstacles they may face in Mauritius, where they do not hold citizenship. The UK Foreign Office has been asked to respond to the legal action by March 25. A spokesperson stated that negotiations focused on maintaining the military base on Diego Garcia while considering the islands' significance to Chagossians.
