Chalmers urges Coalition to clarify NDIS budget cuts
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has called on the Opposition to clarify its plans for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). He is concerned about potential cuts to the program, especially after Liberal senator Jane Hume suggested NDIS spending has been out of control. Hume stated that the Coalition is considering tightening NDIS growth if they win government. She mentioned that while the growth rate is currently around eight percent, she believes further reductions are possible. She emphasized that all government spending should not exceed economic growth, which is expected to be between two to three percent in the coming years. Chalmers criticized the Opposition for not being clear about how their proposals would affect Australians with disabilities. He insists that they need to provide transparency regarding their plans. He also reaffirmed that Labor would not adopt any proposed cuts if the Coalition comes to power. In the interview, Chalmers addressed the larger issue of cost of living relief. He reassured that support for vulnerable groups would be prioritized in the upcoming federal budget. This includes a $150 electricity rebate for every household, which aims to help ease financial pressures. Chalmers further discussed challenges facing Australia’s economy, highlighting new international trade uncertainties. He noted the looming tariffs on Australian aluminium and steel set by the United States, which will take effect soon. Chalmers mentioned that Australia's foreign aid spending would likely not see a significant increase in the current climate of uncertainty. He concluded by reiterating the government's focus on addressing cost-of-living issues that significantly impact the most vulnerable in society.
