Chandigarh MC plans to transfer gaushalas to NGO

Municipal Corporation Chandigarh plans to hand over management of its five gaushalas, or cow shelters, to non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Currently, only the Sector 45 gaushala is run by an NGO. The others are managed by the corporation itself. Most of the gaushalas are nearing full capacity. The newly built gaushala in Raipur Kalan can accommodate around 1,500 cattle, while others have lower capacities, ranging from 200 to 600. The municipal corporation faces ongoing challenges with stray cattle, especially in border areas near Mohali. Despite purchasing vehicles for catching stray cattle and increasing manpower, residents continue to report issues. Municipal councillors have repeatedly voiced concerns about the situation. The corporation is now preparing to call for an Expression of Interest (EOI) to attract NGOs interested in running the gaushalas. The process has begun, and discussions have taken place with several NGOs. However, it remains uncertain how many will respond. Funding and public donations are essential for maintaining these facilities.
