Chandigarh student suicide linked to fake Instagram account
A Class 11 student in Chandigarh has died by suicide, prompting an investigation into a fake Instagram account that was used to post offensive content about teachers. The student's mother filed a complaint with the police, leading to an FIR against unknown individuals. The Chandigarh Police's Cybercrime Cell registered the FIR after the school principal reported the fake account. The principal stated she only learned about the account when police contacted her. Authorities have requested details from Meta, the company behind Instagram, to identify the account's creator. The investigation revealed that the IP address linked to the account belonged to the father of one of the students. Police spoke to the father and his son, who was accompanied by friends during questioning. Officials noted that the process was conducted peacefully, with no reports of physical abuse. The Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Punjab State & Chandigarh Human Rights Commission have sought reports from the police and the school regarding the suicide. The Commission's chairperson expressed concern about the incident and requested updates from the authorities. The minor's family refused to cremate his body, demanding that an FIR be filed against a Chandigarh police officer and school officials. They initially headed to the cremation ground but turned back in protest, citing their insistence on accountability.
