Chandigarh's MC transfers roads to UT due to funding issues
Chandigarh's cash-strapped municipal corporation (MC) is planning to hand over the maintenance of 262 kilometers of roads to the Union Territory (UT) administration. The decision is driven by a lack of funds, which has prevented necessary road repairs for two consecutive seasons. The MC will discuss this proposal in an upcoming general meeting. Currently, the city's road network, which consists of about 2,000 kilometers, includes various categories such as V-3 roads, which are essential for connecting different sectors. The MC has noted that many roads are in poor condition, with around 400 kilometers needing urgent repairs. Despite completing paperwork for important roadworks, the MC has not been able to open tenders due to financial constraints. The corporation estimates that it needs about ₹26 crore to complete the carpeting of these roads. This project has been delayed for three years as funds have not been available. If the proposal is approved, the responsibility for these roads will shift to the UT engineering department. This may help relieve some financial pressure from the MC. Recently, residents have expressed their frustration over ongoing potholes and poor road conditions, urging the MC to take action. In addition to the road proposal, the MC will also discuss implementing an advertisement fee for private firms using 35 roundabouts in the city. This fee is planned to increase by 10% each year. On another note, the finance and contract committee will meet to discuss a project to plant trees and shrubs at the Dadumajra landfill. This beautification effort will cost ₹32 lakh and is expected to be completed in about six months.
