Chapman students protest administrators' leave over DEI issues
About 200 students at Chapman University protested on Monday after two top administrators were placed on leave. Provost Norma Bouchard and Vice President Reg Stewart, who worked on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, were put on leave without explanation last week. The rally was supported by more than 30 student organizations. Students demanded transparency from the university and expressed their desire to keep the cross-cultural center open. They also requested that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers not be allowed on campus. The protest remained peaceful. Dean of Students Jerry Price reminded students about a policy against using amplifying devices without permission during class hours. However, students continued their rallying, chanting "D.E.I." This protest comes amid controversy surrounding the Trump administration's warnings to colleges about alleged antisemitism on campuses. The federal education department is currently investigating Chapman based on a complaint that the university did not properly handle reports of antisemitism related to a student organization. Chapman University stated that it is committed to an inclusive environment and has supported its Jewish community. The situation reflects ongoing tensions around diversity initiatives and university governance.
