Charkop residents oppose coastal interchange due to environmental threats
Residents of Charkop Sector 8 in Mumbai are concerned about the upcoming interchange for the Coastal Road project. They fear this will harm their trees, mangroves, and local infrastructure. The project was announced earlier this month, and 336 trees have been marked for cutting or transplantation. Mili Shetty, the chief coordinator of the Charkop Sector 8 Vikas Samiti, highlighted the area's natural beauty, which includes 136 hectares of mangroves. These trees provide fresh air and support biodiversity. She expressed deep concern about how the project will impact the neighborhood. The residents are worried they will lose much. Residents sent a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). They addressed issues like the planned demolition of a mangrove protection wall, which would be moved back by 30 feet. They questioned how this would affect the mangroves in the area. Another worry is the future of a 90-foot road that will be reduced to a 30-foot service road. This change could hinder emergency services like fire trucks and ambulances. Additionally, the elevated bridge would obstruct views and could increase noise pollution. While a BMC official assured residents their plans would be revised to save some trees, many are still not satisfied. They request the Coastal Road connector be relocated to avoid affecting the trees and mangroves and want the 90-foot road to remain intact. The residents urge BMC officials to visit and explain the project's impact on their community.
