Charlotte Douglas International Airport plans runway expansion and new light rail connection
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) currently manages 87 arrivals and departures per hour, with plans to increase this to 107 by 2027 after the completion of a fourth runway. Groundbreaking for the new runway occurred in June 2023. American Airlines has the largest presence at CLT, recently expanding its gates in Concourse A to a total of 91. This expansion follows the merger of US Airways and American Airlines in 2013, which solidified American's hub operations in Charlotte. In addition to the runway expansion, CLT will see a new light rail station connecting it to downtown Charlotte and surrounding areas. The Lynx Silver Line, set to open in 2030, will feature 29 stations along a nearly 30-mile route.
