Charlotte seeks to host CIAA Tournament from 2028
Organizers in Charlotte are working hard to bring back the CIAA Tournament. They have plans to move many related events to the Spectrum Center. This could help increase attendance at games and unlock more funding from the state government. The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority is leading this initiative. They are collaborating with city officials, the Charlotte Sports Foundation, and major local employers. The CIAA, which represents historically Black colleges and universities, has confirmed that both Baltimore and Charlotte will submit bids by April 15. The CIAA plans to choose a host city for three years starting in 2027. Charlotte City Council will discuss this bid effort during a meeting on Monday. The tournament was previously held in Charlotte from 2006 to 2020. Sources say that Charlotte is likely aiming to host the tournament for three consecutive years beginning in 2028. This is because the Spectrum Center already has events scheduled for 2027, including the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
