The Chartiers Valley girls softball team is gearing up for a new season after a record-breaking performance last year. The Colts finished with 18 wins, the highest in school history, and reached the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs for the fourth straight year. They also achieved their first state tournament win by defeating Cathedral Prep, although they eventually lost in the state quarterfinals. Coach Chris Lloyd aims to build on last season's success, setting high goals for the team. "The first goal is to win the section," he said. Chartiers Valley has moved back up to Class 5A, where competition is tougher. Lloyd believes they can meet the challenge. “We need to continue to hit, but our defense has to be better." The Colts faced a tough start, losing their first two nonsection games. However, they have strong players like Lily Duffill, a junior catcher and Penn State commit. Last year, she had an impressive .527 batting average with 17 home runs. "Her best days are ahead of her," said Lloyd. Senior Delaney O'Connor, another all-state selection, will play center field and provide pitching relief. Last season, she boasted a .500 average and recorded multiple home runs. Senior Taylor Walsh will be the starting pitcher. She achieved 17 wins last year and is committed to Wheeling University. Other key players include Annabelle Helt, Kaitlyn Truong, and five sophomores moving into starting roles. The team is working hard to improve their skills and performance throughout the season. Coach Lloyd believes that even with some inexperienced players, they will get better with practice. The Colts face tough competition in their section from teams like South Fayette and West Allegheny. Lloyd is aware of the challenges ahead but remains optimistic. "We will play 10 games and none will be easy," he said. The team is focused on growing and improving every day as they prepare for the season ahead.
