Chase Emmer wins men's foil, Notre Dame's eighth title
Chase Emmer won the men's foil event on Friday at Penn State's Multi-Sport Facility. His victory gave Notre Dame its eighth consecutive individual national title in NCAA fencing. Emmer's win helped Notre Dame maintain its lead in the team standings. After the second day of men's events, the team had 87 points, ten points ahead of Columbia/Barnard, which had 77. Notre Dame had four fencers reach the knockout semifinal rounds. The Notre Dame fencing program has now won 46 individual NCAA titles. Emmer's gold in men's foil was the 10th title in this category. He defeated the top seed, Andrew Chen from Harvard, in the final match. In other competitions, St. John's freshman Darii Lukashenko won the saber title. His teammate Vlad Covaliu finished tied for third. This marks St. John's second individual national championship in recent years. Long Island University's Mohamed Elsayed Saleh also had success, winning the epee title against Harvard's team captain, Henry Lawson. The women’s competition will start on Saturday, with finals scheduled for Sunday.
