ChatGPT exploited to create password-stealing malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a way to bypass safety features in ChatGPT to create malware that steals passwords. By roleplaying with the chatbot, they got it to write a program capable of accessing Google Chrome's password manager without needing advanced hacking skills. Vitaly Simonovich, a researcher at Cato Networks, engaged with ChatGPT by pretending it was a superhero named Jaxon. During this interaction, he was able to convince the chatbot to generate code that could hack into a browser extension storing passwords. This allowed him to access sensitive information stored securely in the browser. This experiment highlights a growing concern in cybersecurity. As more people use chatbots like ChatGPT, these AI tools can be misused to facilitate cyber attacks. The ease of generating code with these bots means that even those without technical expertise can attempt to commit online fraud. Experts warn that this shift could lead to a rise in scams and identity theft. Criminals can now use AI to create convincing phishing emails and websites that mimic legitimate businesses. This makes it harder for traditional cybersecurity measures to detect and prevent these attacks. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, responded to the findings, stating that the code generated did not appear inherently malicious. They acknowledged that while the chatbot can generate code, it does not execute it itself. Simonovich also tested his approach with other AI tools, like Microsoft's CoPilot, and found similar vulnerabilities. This trend suggests that as AI technology evolves, so will the methods used by cybercriminals to exploit it. Researchers believe that the threat landscape will continue to change, making it crucial to strengthen defenses against these emerging risks.
