Chelsea's midfielders could number ten after signing Essugo
Chelsea is expecting a busy summer transfer window as they continue to bring in new players. Since the takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, the club has signed 39 players. In 2025, they are preparing to add even more midfielders to their already crowded roster. Two of their major signings over the past year are Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, costing £106.8 million and £100 million, respectively. They have become key players in Chelsea's midfield. However, the club is still looking to add more talent in that area. Recent reports suggest that Chelsea has agreed to sign Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon, along with his teammate Geovany Quenda. Once these transfers go through, Chelsea could have ten midfielders on their roster. Currently, Fernandez and Caicedo are expected to remain at Chelsea for the long term, as they both have contracts until at least 2031. Their performance on the field shows they are trusted players for manager Enzo Maresca. Young midfielder Romeo Lavia has struggled with injuries since joining Chelsea but is showing promise now that he is fit. He will hope to secure his place in the team moving forward. Meanwhile, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is also not a regular starter and may need to reassess his role at the club. French player Mathis Amougou was signed last month but has only played once since his arrival. He may find himself on loan again to gain more experience. Chelsea's youth players have benefited from loan spells at other clubs. For example, Andrey Santos is thriving in Ligue 1 and could join the first team next season. Other players like Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu are currently on loan, with Chukwuemeka potentially making his move to Borussia Dortmund permanent. Looking ahead, Essugo and Kendry Paez are two young talents expected to join Chelsea soon. Paez is seen as a promising midfielder, while Essugo will add depth to the team. Chelsea’s academy players are also on loan this season, with some injuries affecting their participation. The summer transfer window may bring many changes for Chelsea, as the club looks to refine its squad and manage the high number of midfielders.
