Chennai explores rapid transit to new Parandur airport

thehindu.com

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is exploring a regional rapid transit system (RRTS) to connect the proposed second airport at Parandur. Two corridors are under study: one from Chennai Airport to Parandur and another from Chennai to Vellore via Parandur. The RRTS will feature stations every 10 km and trains that can travel at speeds of 100-120 km/h. This differs from the current metro system, which has stations every 1-2 km and operates at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The state government has announced plans for three RRTS corridors, including Chennai-Kancheepuram-Vellore. CMRL is also assessing connectivity from the existing Meenambakkam airport to Parandur to benefit future passengers.
