Chennai invests Rs 1,660 crore in infrastructure upgrades

Chennai is planning major improvements to its infrastructure with a budget of Rs 1,660 crore. This funding will go towards upgrading roads, bus terminals, and flood control systems. The city hopes these changes will enhance daily life for its residents. The Chennai Corporation will modernize several bus terminals, starting work soon. Key locations like Saidapet, Guindy, and Ekkatuthangal will receive air-conditioned waiting areas and better amenities. Additional funds will improve four other terminals with enhanced facilities, including digital information boards and comfortable waiting areas. All bus shelters will also have CCTV cameras for safety. Road improvements are also on the agenda. The road budget has increased significantly, with plans to re-lay major roads to improve traffic flow. Around 200 bus shelters will be updated for better commuter convenience. A significant portion of the budget, Rs 1,032 crore, is allocated for stormwater drainage projects to prevent flooding in critical areas like Madipakkam and Kovalam. This funding comes from various sources, including disaster mitigation funds. Despite an increase in revenue for the Greater Chennai Corporation, challenges remain. A large part of the budget is spent on salaries and operational costs. Experts are urging officials to improve financial planning and prioritize infrastructure development to support long-term growth for the city.
