Chennai launches student enrolment campaign for GCC schools
Chennai Mayor R. Priya has started a new campaign to increase student enrolment in Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) schools for the upcoming academic year. The campaign will last for three months and aims to encourage parents to enroll their children. On March 22, 2025, Mayor Priya launched the effort by sending out 45 autorickshaws with promotional materials. She also provided pamphlets to schoolteachers at Ripon Buildings. The autorickshaws will travel three days a week across 15 zones. Teachers and headteachers will visit homes to promote admissions and facilitate immediate enrolments. Since the beginning of March, 3,500 new students have already enrolled in GCC schools. The GCC operates 417 schools, including primary, middle, high, and higher secondary institutions. Among them are 336 kindergarten sections. The Mayor highlighted the facilities available, such as smart boards, hygiene facilities, and modern labs. Students also receive numerous benefits, including free uniforms, textbooks, and notebooks. There are incentives for good attendance and high exam scores, as well as scholarships for further education. Additionally, students receive training in sports, tailoring, and self-defense. The event was attended by top education officials and local councillors, showing strong support for the enrolment campaign.
