Chennai mosquito control suffers from manpower shortages
Mosquito control efforts in Chennai are facing challenges due to a lack of manpower. Residents are urging the Greater Chennai Corporation to hire more workers to address mosquito breeding, especially in storm-water drain manholes. Councillors report that the number of permanent workers for mosquito control is insufficient. Many current workers are nearing retirement, and temporary staff are also lacking. This has led to inadequate monitoring and response to mosquito populations. The number of entomologists in the Greater Chennai Corporation has decreased, and vacancies remain unfilled. Funding agencies have called for a reduction in vacancies to improve professional capability, but the number of motivated workers in mosquito control has declined.
