The Greater Chennai Corporation is planning to build two multi-level parking facilities in Tiruvottiyur and Kodambakkam. These projects aim to reduce parking problems in these areas. In Tiruvottiyur, a new parking facility will be set up for two-wheelers. It will be located near the Municipality Dispensary Complex, covering 1,563.62 square meters. This facility will have space for 1,052 two-wheelers and will include a commercial complex. Meanwhile, Kodambakkam will have a parking facility for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. This facility will be built on an acre of land near the Kodambakkam Bridge, covering 1,667 square meters. It will accommodate 422 two-wheelers and 75 four-wheelers. Both facilities will have CCTV surveillance, security personnel, and public amenities like toilets and drinking water. They will use an automated fee-collection system and provide real-time information on parking availability. Experts emphasize the need for managed priced parking nearby to ensure these facilities are used effectively. If parking on adjacent streets is free or cheaper, people might choose that instead. Currently, the multi-level parking facility in T. Nagar is struggling with low usage. On weekends, it averages about 200 cars, while weekdays see around 100. Street parking remains a problem, as many employees park near their workplaces. Residents have expressed concerns about street congestion, particularly in areas like Mangai Street. Some believe that new projects would be more beneficial in busier places like Vadapalani rather than in Tiruvottiyur.
