Chennai plans to clear encroachments from M.G.R. Canal
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to remove illegal structures along the M.G.R. Canal in the Kodambakkam Zone. This canal runs two kilometers from K. K. Nagar to Jafferkhanpet, where it meets the Adyar River. Recently, officials found around 200 structures located near the canal. On March 17, the GCC issued notices to the owners of 47 properties in K.K. Nagar. If the city removes these properties, it will recover about 12,900 square feet of space. This area is at risk of flooding each year because the canal has been narrowed by buildings and sewer connections. After the demolition, the GCC intends to strengthen the canal’s bunds and build a retaining wall along its length. They also plan to install a mesh fence to keep waste out of the waterway and place trash bins at various spots. The estimated cost for this project is ₹14.5 crore. The last effort to remove encroachments was in 2021, when 20 properties were taken down to improve the bunds. Officials believe these changes will help with future cleaning efforts since vehicles need enough space to access the canal. The last desilting work was completed in November 2024. Property owners have 17 days to respond to the notices by providing proof of their building plans and permits. If they do not respond, the GCC may proceed with demolitions.
