The Health Department in Chennai has upgraded six newborn stabilization units to improve care for infants. This effort is part of a plan announced in last year’s State Budget to enhance services at 471 primary health centers with many deliveries. Health Minister Ma. Subramanian outlined how these upgrades aim to reduce neonatal mortality rates. The six units are located in Tiruvottiyur, Madhavaram, Valasaravakkam, Ambattur, Alandur, and Pulianthope. Additionally, a unit in the Government Hospital in Vaniyambadi has been upgraded to a Special Newborn Care Unit. The Minister noted that the state’s infant mortality rate has decreased from 13 per 1,000 live births in 2020 to eight last year. He attributed this improvement to various initiatives being implemented. During the event, a short film focusing on adolescent health and nutrition was also released. Plans to improve adolescent health and prevent pregnancy among young people were emphasized. Moreover, services for early detection of autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have started in several districts. Under a community-based cancer screening program, 148 people were diagnosed with cancer in four districts, and treatment is underway. Screening will expand to all revenue divisional districts in the state starting next month. The administration of the HPV vaccine for 14-year-old girls is also set to begin soon. Mayor R. Priya and other officials attended the event, where awards were given for achievements in family welfare measures.
