Cherneka Johnson retains WBA bantamweight title in Sydney
Cherneka Johnson has successfully retained her WBA bantamweight title with a strong victory over Nina Hughes in Sydney. This match was a rematch after their previous fight ended controversially in Johnson's favor. Johnson dominated the bout, and Hughes's team stopped the fight in the seventh round, leading to a TKO win for Johnson. This victory brought Johnson's record to 17 wins in 19 professional matches. In the same event, George Kambosos faced Jake Wyllie in a super-lightweight fight. Kambosos won by unanimous decision, scoring 117-111 on two judges' cards and 115-113 on the third. He faced challenges during the fight, including a cut over his eye. Wyllie stepped in just five days before the match when Kambosos’s original opponent withdrew. Kambosos expressed satisfaction with the win, saying, "A win's a win, and I won quite well on the points." With this victory, Kambosos has positioned himself for a potential title shot against undefeated IBF super-lightweight champion Richardson Hitchins. Meanwhile, Skye Nicolson lost her featherweight world title to Tiara Brown in a closely contested match, ending Nicolson's unbeaten streak. Brown claimed the WBC strap, winning by split decision after an intense ten rounds.
