Chicago's CTA slow zones now cover 30% of network
Slow zones on Chicago's CTA rail system have increased to cover 30% of the network, up from 13% five years ago. This growth has led to longer commutes for riders, with trains often limited to speeds as low as 15 miles per hour. The CTA attributes the rise in slow zones to aging tracks and insufficient funding for maintenance. Many lines, including the Blue, Green, and Brown Lines, are affected, with some areas experiencing significant slow zone increases. Efforts to address these issues include a planned rebuild of the Blue Line, supported by a $111 million federal grant. However, funding uncertainties remain, and advocates stress the need for more financial support to improve transit reliability.
