Chief Justice cancels Netherlands trip over Duterte petitions
Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo canceled his trip to The Hague, Netherlands, where he was set to sign terms with The Hague Academy of International Law. A special order had named Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen as acting chief justice during his absence. The cancellation follows Gesmundo's involvement in virtual discussions regarding petitions to prevent the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. The Supreme Court denied a restraining order requested by Duterte and others on March 11. The court also conducted a special raffle for habeas corpus petitions filed by Duterte's children, assigning the case for further action. A show-cause order was issued, requiring respondents to explain their position within 24 hours.
