China builds £345m road connecting Russia and Armenia
China is constructing a £345 million road, the Kvesheti-Kobi, to connect Russia and Armenia through Georgia. The road will include six bridges and five tunnels over 5.5 miles in the Khada Valley, aiming to improve trade routes. The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. It will bypass areas that are often blocked by winter weather, enhancing accessibility for trade. While the road is part of China's Belt and Road initiative, some Georgians express concern about closer ties to Russia, which occupies part of Georgia. Critics question the project's impact on cultural heritage and its necessity given the lack of diplomatic relations.
