China discovers Hailin impact crater formed by ancient meteor strike
Researchers have discovered the Hailin impact crater in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. This crater, measuring 4,460 feet across and 600 feet deep, was formed by a meteor impact millions of years ago, but its exact age is still unknown. The Hailin crater is unique due to its oval shape and location on a mountain ridge. It is the fourth confirmed impact crater in China and the first of its kind on a mountain ridge globally. The crater's shape is influenced by the rugged terrain beneath it. Scientists found evidence of an ancient lake within the crater and identified shock deformations in quartz grains, indicating a significant impact event. Future research plans include drilling into the crater to study its structure and history.
