China-Philippines relations strained over South China Sea tensions

China's official newspaper stated that relations with the Philippines are at a "crossroads" due to ongoing tensions over the South China Sea (SCS). The SCS is vital for over $3 trillion in annual trade. China urged the Philippines to adhere to commitments and criticized its actions as violations of sovereignty. In 2016, an international tribunal ruled in favor of the Philippines, a decision China does not recognize.
