China's population declines for third consecutive year as birthrate drops
China's population has decreased for the third consecutive year, dropping by 1.39 million to 1.408 billion. This decline is attributed to a falling birthrate, with deaths outpacing births since 2022. Despite efforts to encourage higher birthrates, such as subsidies and social pressure, the trend continues. Economic challenges, including high living costs and youth unemployment, contribute to the reluctance to have children. In response to the demographic crisis, China is gradually raising the retirement age. Other East Asian countries, like Japan and South Korea, are facing similar population declines due to comparable issues.
