China's satellites exhibit advanced space combat tactics
The US Space Force has reported that China is enhancing its space combat capabilities. Recent observations revealed five Chinese satellites performing synchronized movements described as "dogfighting" in orbit. General Michael Guetlein of the Space Force discussed these activities at the McAleese annual Defense Programs Conference. He noted that the satellites moved in coordinated patterns, indicating advanced military tactics. This kind of maneuvering suggests that China is practicing space combat strategies. The Space Force confirmed that the specific satellites involved include the Shiyan-24C and Shijian-6 05A/B. These satellites were observed in low Earth orbit during 2024. The information was gathered from publicly available sources. LeoLabs, a Colorado-based space monitoring organization, also validated the reported activities. They mentioned that Russian spacecraft are conducting similar operations with three satellites currently in proximity. The US defense department has highlighted that both China and Russia are improving their capabilities in space. While satellites have previously coordinated, the complexity of coordinating multiple satellites represents a significant advancement. Guetlein emphasized the need for the US Space Force to adapt as the technological gap with rivals narrows. This change calls for strengthened defenses to deter potential aggression in space. He pointed out that the environment has shifted, and the US must rethink its strategy to maintain its advantages.
