Chinese-Americans oppose visa ban for Chinese students
A group of prominent Chinese-Americans is speaking out against a new proposal that would restrict visas for students from China. This group, known as the Committee of 100, was founded by well-known figures like cellist Yo-Yo Ma and architect I.M. Pei. Gary Locke, the committee's chairman, criticized the proposed legislation during a statement on Monday. He served as Washington's ambassador to China from 2011 to 2014. Locke emphasized that the United States has always benefited from welcoming talented individuals from across the globe. He warned that blocking Chinese students would harm America's leadership in areas like science and technology. The bill was introduced last week by Republican Representative Riley Moore from West Virginia. If it passes the Republican-controlled House and Senate, it will need President Donald Trump’s approval to become law. The bill aims to stop Chinese nationals from entering the U.S. on student visas, regardless of their academic field or level of study.
