Chinese scientists uncover genetic secrets behind tardigrades' radiation resistance
Chinese scientists have decoded the mechanisms that allow tardigrades, or water bears, to resist high radiation levels. A study published in *Science* details three key traits linked to their resilience. Researchers analyzed the genome of a newly identified tardigrade species from Henan Province. They found that gene transfer from other organisms, a special protein for DNA repair, and stress-related proteins contribute to their radiation resistance. The findings may help improve human cell resilience to radiation. Scientists suggest that the molecules providing protection in tardigrades could enhance the anti-radiation ability of human cells.
