Citizens oppose cutting trees for Metro 9 in Uttan
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to cut down nearly 10,000 trees in the Uttan area of Bhayandar. This is for a car depot linked to the Metro 9 corridor, which connects Dahisar East and Mira Bhayandar. Environmentalists have strongly criticized this plan, claiming it endangers the local environment. On March 12, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) issued a public notice about the tree cuttings. Citizens had until March 19 to voice their objections or suggestions. The notice described the trees as "an obstruction" for the depot's construction. However, many believe the process is merely a formality. Activists argue this tree-cutting will cause significant ecological harm, especially with rising temperatures and climate change threats. They emphasize that alternative land use options should be explored before resorting to cutting down trees. Concerns have been raised about the lack of information provided in the notice, including site plans and the impact on local wildlife. Residents, like Jatin Dadhich, also pointed out that crucial details, including tree age and potential compensatory planting locations, were missing. They noted that a short notice period of only seven days was inadequate for such a large-scale environmental decision. As of the last day for public feedback, the MBMC had received 68 responses. A public hearing is planned, but the date and location have not yet been announced. MMRDA officials did not respond to inquiries about future tree planting plans and the overall environmental impact of the proposed tree removals.
