Civil services offer impactful decision-making opportunities, says SP
During a recent event, Gautam Goyal, the Superintendent of Police in Salem, emphasized the unique decision-making power found in civil services. He spoke at the inaugural UPSC Aspirants’ Meet hosted at Vysya College on Tuesday. The event was a collaboration between Shankar IAS Academy and The Hindu. Goyal highlighted that civil service officers face a variety of challenges every day, from local to national issues. He stated that the decisions made by these officers can significantly impact many lives. He acknowledged that while the private sector can offer comfort and success, only civil services provide the chance to influence society positively. He outlined the opportunities available in civil services and noted that individuals could enter these roles at a young age. Goyal explained that preparing for the civil service exam requires a solid understanding of the basics. While familiar roles like IAS, IPS, and IFS are well-known, he encouraged students to learn about other government services as well. The examination consists of three phases: preliminary, mains, and interview. Each phase calls for a particular strategy. He advised students to stay informed about current affairs through newspapers and to understand their syllabus deeply. Goyal encouraged a focused approach to study, suggesting that students pick a few trustworthy resources instead of getting lost in a sea of materials. He also pointed out that students should decide between online coaching, offline classes, or self-study based on their clarity on the subject. Goyal concluded by stressing the importance of hard work and persistence in achieving success. At the end of the event, he donated ₹30,000 worth of publications from The Hindu to the college library. The academy's representatives also shared insights about civil service preparations and opportunities. The college principal was present at the event.
