CJP emphasizes need for timely justice reforms in Pakistan

Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has called for necessary changes in the judicial system to ensure timely justice. He spoke during a meeting with senior judicial officials about improving access to justice for all. Afridi stressed that individuals involved in legal cases should be treated with dignity. He pointed out that reforms should help reduce the number of pending cases and ensure that justice is delivered more efficiently. The meeting included high-ranking officials like Supreme Court Registrar Muhammad Saleem Khan and the Director General of the Federal Judicial Academy. Participants discussed ongoing efforts in judicial reforms and digitalisation. Progress in digital case filing and enhancing transparency was highlighted. The IT Directorate updated attendees on new technologies aimed at making judicial processes quicker and more efficient. The focus remains on improving accessibility and efficiency in the justice system. Currently, there are roughly 57,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court and an additional 2.4 million in other courts across Pakistan. Between October 28, 2024, and March 7, 2025, 27,312 cases were addressed, with 12,109 resolved and 7,370 new cases filed. Chief Justice Afridi's reforms are intended to tackle the backlog and modernise the judicial system. These include new technology like the e-Affidavit system to simplify filing processes and a Case Management System for easy access to case documents. Feedback from legal professionals and the public has also been encouraged to build trust in the legal system.
