CKD leads to significant hair loss issues
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its advanced form, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), can lead to hair loss, known as alopecia. This condition affects the skin and can cause various issues for patients. Experts say that about 50% to 100% of people with ESRD experience skin changes, including hair loss. Hair loss in kidney disease can be linked to several factors, including inflammation due to the illness and complications like anemia. Alopecia can appear in different forms. The most common type, telogen effluvium, occurs when hair follicles shed more hair than usual because of stress or illness. Around 10% of patients on dialysis for ESRD experience alopecia. The hair growth cycle consists of different phases, and in those with chronic illnesses, more hair can enter the shedding phase, leading to noticeable hair loss. While there is no specific treatment for CKD-related alopecia, managing underlying conditions like anemia may help. Doctors suggest alternatives to medications that could cause hair loss and recommend some supplements. Topical and oral treatments, including minoxidil and biotin, may provide benefits to some patients. Herbal supplements, like Nutrafol and Viviscal, show promise in promoting hair growth, but patients should consult their doctors before use. Doctors emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and maintaining good relationships between nephrologists and dermatologists. This teamwork can improve patient care and manage skin-related issues linked to kidney disease.
