"Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" excludes minimap for exploration

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will not have a minimap for players to navigate. The game's producer, Francois Meurisse, announced this decision at an Xbox event during the Game Developers Conference. He explained that a minimap might make players rely too much on it, and the game wants players to experience exploration like the characters do. Instead of a minimap, there will be a compass on the world map to help players find their way. The game draws inspiration from classic JRPGs and games by FromSoftware, such as Dark Souls. It features turn-based battles and a designed world that can be linear yet intense. Meurisse noted that the level design aims to create a challenging atmosphere similar to FromSoftware’s titles. The game’s director, Guillaume Broche, is a fan of Sekiro and hopes gamers from that community will enjoy this game. Clair Obscur's battles allow players to parry and dodge using action points instead of traditional mana. The game has a distinctly French flavor, with cultural references in its design and dialogue. Although it inspires from Japanese styles, the team aimed for a unique look rather than mimicking anime. Despite being smaller in scope, the game is still ambitious, developed by a team of only 30 people. The vision remained clear by avoiding online modes and open-world elements. Meurisse highlighted new technology that allows smaller teams to create impressive 3D games today. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on April 24. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass but is not an exclusive release. Meurisse emphasized the goal is to reach as many players as possible.
