Clash over witchcraft suspicion leaves three dead
Three people were killed and three others were seriously hurt in a clash over witchcraft claims in Kharipalli village, Ganjam district, on Tuesday evening. Police reported that the deceased included Khadal Behera, 70, his son Ratnakar Behera, 35, and their relative Ramesh Behera, 40. The violence began when a group of villagers attacked Khadal and Ratnakar with sharp weapons due to suspicions of witchcraft. Both men died at the scene. When their relatives tried to help, Ramesh and three others were also attacked. Ramesh later died at Dharakote hospital. Police believe that a longstanding feud between the Behera family and the other group may have led to the attack. Ganjam Superintendent of Police Subhendu Kumar Patra confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. To maintain order, heavy police forces have been deployed in the village. While tensions remain high, the situation is currently under control, with senior officers monitoring events closely.
