Clashes in Islamabad leave one policeman dead and dozens injured as Imran Khan supporters protest
Clashes erupted outside Islamabad on Monday as supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan confronted security forces. One policeman was killed and over 70 people were injured during the violence, which followed a government lockdown aimed at preventing protests. Authorities have blocked major roads and shut down public transport in Punjab to deter Khan's supporters from marching on parliament. The government reported that around 80 protesters were arrested, while Khan's party claimed many of its members were also injured. Gatherings in Islamabad are banned, and schools in the area have been closed. The protests are part of ongoing efforts by Khan's party to demand his release from jail, where he has been since August 2023.
